Jairam Ramesh a true enviromentalist .....

Who is Jairam Ramesh?

Indian Minister of state for Environment and Forest

Why is he in news?

Jairam Ramesh has given teeth to the environment ministry as T N Seshan  had done to the Election Commission. Nobody used to take the environment ministry seriously earlier. Projects used to go on without environmental clearances or conditional clearances which were never honoured.

What are his major achievements?
  • junked the much trumpeted idea of the interlinking of rivers
  • He stunned even his own Cabinet and party colleagues by deciding to go around the country to conduct public consultations on the issue of the introduction of bt-brinjal in India.
  • He pulled up the Orissa government for violating the Bauxite mining guidelines (Vedanta ,Nyamgiri issue)
  • he announced the setting up of the first National Green Tribunal in Bhopal in April 2010
  • ordered the review of Sindhdurg mining lease
  • suspended the work of the Maheshwar dam on the river Narmada in Madhya Pradesh  as the conditions of statutory environmental clearance were not complied with and the resettlement and rehabilitation of the project-affected families was less than satisfactory.
Truly commendable in a country where ministers are titular heads.

Do you think if India has to change it needs more ministers like Jairam Ramesh? Post your thoughts in the comment section of this post.

    1. I beg to differ with you on this Mam...
May be He has done good work in above listed projects ....
Their are certain issues put black dot on this Ministry also .......Like Navi Mumbai Airport issue .... First Environment Ministry's clearance is given to the proposed site .... then it is taken back ... the whole thing is pending due to Environment Ministry .....Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has come forward After pleas for an early clearance He said in September that he would personally look into the issue to resolve the matter...... Basically there is corruption involved ... in the matter ....... SAME OLD INDIAN Problem Nothing New ... ... but yes he is better than others in terms that at least He is doing something....... ....

    2. very true,if India has to progress vis-a-vis its aspirations, it definitely needs more aware & belligerent statesman..
Jairam Ramesh is one of the most intellectual leaders today in India. A brilliant speaker with deep insights on subjects as far as foreign affairs! but i was disappointed when he turned down the "idea of the interlinking of rivers", i know its a massive project & only one of its kind, but if accomplished we would have bid adieu to droughts & floods forever in India.
to cite an example, China is building an artificial river to bring water up to Beijing from regions as far as north & south China, its the biggest & the most expensive project in the world costing around "$60 billion !!" I am of the opinion that development cannot be at the cost of environment but Innovative & skillful planning can go hand in hand with environment, though theres a huge cost attached to it, but at least both can co exist together!

    3. Renowned for his intellectual calibre and executive competence, the Environment Minister is doing a great job. In this age of global warming, the Carnegie Mellon Alumnus stood for the protection of India's flora and fauna which must be the first priority rather than succumbing to greed for creating wealth and causing catastrophic outcomes for the nation.

Before attending the Copenhagen Summit in December 2009, Jairam Ramesh warned the Central Government in the Rajya Sabha that the Himalayas will suffer the most if they don't get their act together on time.

I won't be surprised if Jairam Ramesh will not give an Environment clearance for the Navi Mumbai Airport.
