Common Wealth Games : fiasco :(

What is CWG?
The Commonwealth Games is an international, multi-sport event which is held every four years and features competitions involving thousands of elite athletes from members of the Commonwealth of Nations.

As well as many Olympic sports, the Games also include some sports that are played mainly in Commonwealth countries, such as lawn bowls, rugby sevens and netball. The Games are overseen by the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF), which also controls the sporting programme and selects the host cities. The host city is selected from across the Commonwealth, with eighteen cities in seven countries having hosted it.

CommonWealth countries:
The Commonwealth of Nations, normally referred to as the Commonwealth and previously known as the British Commonwealth, is an intergovernmental organisation of fifty-four independent member states. All but two of these countries were formerly part of the British Empire.

CWG and India connection?
The 2010 Commonwealth Games are the nineteenth Commonwealth Games, and the ninth to be held under that name. The Games are scheduled to be held in New Delhi , India between 3 October and 14 October 2010. The games will be the largest multi-sport event conducted to date in Delhi and India generally, which has previously hosted the Asian Games in 1951 and 1982. The opening ceremony is scheduled to take place at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Delhi

Certain pointers towards the lackadaiscal attitude portrayed by the Indian organising committee :
  • corruption charges against Suresh Kalmadi (this was brought to light by the media when the arrangements for hosting the CWG were found inadequate)
  • footover bridge leading to the Nehru Stadium (where the inaugration is to happen) collapsed
  • this was followed by collapse of a false ceiling in the weightlifting stadium
  • hygiene concerns in the CWG village
International reaction to the above events :
  • many top athelets have pulled out of the event [Dani Samuels (UK)] citing security and hygiene concerns
  • Scotland stopped its team from coming to India
  • Australia warns nationals of troubles during the CWG
  • Piling on the embarrassment for the organisers, Commonwealth Games Federation Chief Executive Mike Hooper on Tuesday termed the Athletes Village as "filthy and uninhabitable".
  • NZ hires its own cleaners for the filthy CWG village
Government's shocking reaction to these events:
  • Jaipal Reddy : concerns are exaggerated
  • Sheila Dikshit : the footover bridge is for the spectators and not the athletes (comment after the collapse of the bridge) : blamed the media for exaggerating and called these incidents minor glitches
  • Lalit Bhanot : CWG official Bhanot said 'cleanliness standards of other countries are different' (comment on the concerns over the hygiene concerns in the CWG village)
Questions to ponder over?
  • Have the Commonwealth Games sullied India's image globally?
  • Is India the only one to be blamed in the CWG fiasco?
  • Can the games still be a success?

  1. national embarassment due to in-born corruption. we all are INDIANS and i think nothing or noone is bigger than the nation. corruption is made a crucial part of politics and government but at least these officials should have spared this event for their money making activities. seriously it has ridiculed the country itself due to some careless people who call themselves indians.

  2. It's an inside secret but the move is deliberate. All top athletes from all over the world pull out, leaving easy pickings for Indian athletes. The politicians way of showing that the care.

  3. The pre-CWG preparations(!) have been a farce. From corruption to inadequacies, everything has made India look incompetent and unfit to host an event of a rank as that of CWG. Besides, what is more perturbing is the government's laidback reaction and inaction.
CWG could have been India's golden chance to shutup her critics but that seems highly unlikely now.

  4. After the corruption fiasco that came into light in August, we contemplated that the pace of the work would be accelerated and appropriately scrutinized. But the lackadaisical attitude of the authorities is clearly reflecting in the CWG mess.
It deeply hurts every Indian 'by heart' to watch its country's image being tarnished. But the authorities blinded by corruption will never understand these sentiments.
The CWG - an opportunity to showcase India's prowess globally has ironically been converted to a grave, thanks to a few tainted officials.

  5. On one hand India has emerged as the fourth strongest nation in the world and on the other we have such shameful events happening in CWG. Indian image has surely been tarnished. However successful the games might become, but the world will think twice before selecting India as a host for any big event.

  7. Corruption, hygiene and security are major problems faced by India.Trough CWG world has come to know about this.It has sullied India's image globally. The excuses given by politicians prove how incompetent they are in keeping their words.

  8. when we won the bid to hold the cwg, we people were excited about the games coming to India. Honestly I was excited about the queen's baton, but it turned out to be more dissappointment than a hope. When we went to melbourne and made ostentatious display of our culture and tradition, we thought we will pull it off, given our country's massive means to raise the capital for the games, but the corruption charges against Mr Kalmadi were dissappointing and that raises the question of credibility.
Though I am optimistic about the games, there are lots of questions to be answered and for sure these things will be uprooted after the games have concluded. India is anxious about the recent developments about the cwg village and I hope the athelets coming to our country go back with good regards for our country, if they are dissappointed then it will have a deep and long lasting impact on the future of Indian image and world will think wheter India is an apt place for such a huge committment!!!

  9. Much has been written and spoken about the Commonwealth Games. However, all the writings and debates surrounding the CWG fiasco are well founded. The shoddy arrangements and unhygienic living conditions speak volumes. Suresh Kalmadi, Lalit bhanot and the organizing committee of the commonwealth games have brought immense shame to the country. India's image as a developing country has seriously been challenged.

  10. India's image has certainly been tarnished because unfortunately human's have this tendency to remember the negatives over the positives and talk over it again and again. we have definitely failed to some extent when it comes to managing the event but we can surely make up for it in the performance part of it as actions always speak louder than words. lets be positive and hope for the best!

  13. atlast cwg ended on a high....thx to the combined efforts of military forces who tookover from the govt to make the event such a great success gobally. It had one of the highest viewership of all time.....!!! not only this but also in medals tally india was 2nd but the point to be noticed was that the female athlets performed much better than expectations eg: Sania Nehwal who took india to the 2nd position as there was only one gold medal difference between england and india...!!! but i also agree no country's performance coulg match that of autralia..it had more than double gold medals then what india had .this shows its dominance in having the largest number of world class athlets....!!!!
but the major area wht i would like to bring the eye would be is : only 1 question "is our media ppl indians or foreigners or terrorists ???????"
i am using such harsh words for media is because allready we had spent around thousand's of crores for the cwg, we could have done the audit of the cwg even after the end of cwg...this brought the wrong image of india allover the world....if the indian media had supported cwg it could have reached an alltogether to a much gretaer hieghits...
i also agree there were some points which were not acceptable but media just kepy on focussing on thos 10 points while 1000 other points were excellant which was alltogether ignored.....!!!!!

  15. no rounak ,I am not supporting u ......because the CWG MATTER is a best example of corruption. The contracts given by CWG team are not proper and it involved with corruption
eg.they take a chair, umbrella on rent whose rent price is much greater than its sell price.
and anybody can point out this corruption because it is to clear to seen.
