This week's grammar quiz was based on helper verbs also called as Auxillaries. These verbs are called helper verbs coz they help in changing the tense and also help indicate the tense [we would begin with our tense quizzes next week onwards].
There are two types of Auxillaries:
- Primary Auxillaries
- Modal Auxillaries
- to be [ am,is,are,was,were]
- have [has,had]
- do [does,did]
eg She is playing in the garden.[here 'is' is a helper verb]
She is in the garden.[here 'is' is the main verb]
Modal Auxillaries (MA) : they are used to indicate the mood of the verb in a sentence. They help identify the relationship between the speaker and the listener or writer and the reader.
The meanings that the modals convey depend on their usage. The following table would help you differentiate among the different meanings conveyed by different modals.

ma'am in fourth sentence if we use 'SHOULD'..... shouldn't the sentence be like... " should you have ANY problrm let me know"
ReplyDeleteHah!! All correct :)
ReplyDeleteDear Krunal,
ReplyDeleteIn the fourth sentence the article 'a' does the function of 'any'.Therefore the indefinite pronoun 'any' is not required.
mam, Isnt the 3rd sentence sounding incorect? when had better is used..As in john had better studied..
ReplyDeletehello mam,
ReplyDeleteWhat's the meaning of koi ora?
Dear Anonymous,
ReplyDelete'Had better' as a modal is always use indicate a tone of threat/warning.In such cases the verb will always in the simple present.
eg. You had better meet the Principal ......
its very informative ...thanks
ReplyDeleteHi Swapnila,
ReplyDeleteI often get confused while using modal auxillaries. When the sentence is long (involving conjunction and modal auxillary), I make mistake with the tense. I wish I could give you an example.
Also, I have learnt that some modal aux are replaceable or can be interchanged among themselves like would/could etc
Dear Pankaj,
ReplyDeleteI hope this quiz has helped solve your confusion regarding the usage of modals.
i got all correct..but still have doubt in the third answer..why 'should' is the answer? Arun (Arun's batch)
ReplyDeletemam, in the third sentence their is a option 'had better' can you please let me know that when the modal aux. 'had better' is used
ReplyDeleteMam i got d answers correct. But still there seems to be some guessing or previous knowledge in it. I'm never sure about the answers. Is there any book that could help in understand the basics of grammar
ReplyDeletei dint get the "John had better studied last night" sentence.is the use of had better correct in the sentence?
ReplyDeleteHello Ma'am,
ReplyDeleteIn the first sentence 'One ought to help the needy' if the word 'must' is used wouldn't that be correct? So how come ONLY 'ought to' can be the correct answer? Please explain the reason behind it....!:)
Dear Rakesh and Arun,
ReplyDeletePlz check the explanation for the usage of various modals posted in the above post.
Dear Namrita,
ReplyDeleteHelping the needy is a moral obligation and not just a compulsion.Hence the usage of the modal 'ought to' and not 'must'
Dear Niks,
ReplyDeleteThe usage of 'had better'is absolutely correct as it indcates a threat or warning.
helloo maam,
ReplyDeletei got most of them right...but can u please throw some light on the usage of should and must...because both sound as a compulsion sometimes...thank you
Dear Anonymous,
ReplyDeleteShould is used to indicate an advice while must is used to indicate compulsion. What sounds right may not always be right.
Secondly we also need to appreciate a fact that grammar as a concept works only if the opposite person also understands it.If people cannot differentiate between the usage of should and must then what ever one uses will not make much of a difference in the meaning conveyed.
