Sample SOP - II
Application for Doctorate in the English Language
I love words. A voracious reader from childhood, I devoured everything I could lay eyes on, from the Hardy Boys to Hemmingway; from Sheldon to Shakespeare. My love affair with the English language blossomed as I unravelled the mysteries surrounding the origin of words, their range and scope, and their great power in the communication process.
I graduated in Arts with English as my major subject; during which time I did a short stint as a teacher with an NGO (Non-Government Organisation – or not-for-profit organisation, as it is known in the West). That short teaching stint paved the way for my future as a teacher.
I then did my MA at the Centre for Foreign languages, Hyderabad, with Etymology as my major subject. Upon completion, I worked as Junior Editor with Outlook, a travel magazine. While the job paid very well, I couldn’t leave behind my love for words and their stories.
This energy and insatiable curiosity about words had to find a vent, and it did so in my pet project – firstly my E-magazine ‘wordoful’; and then my website www.wordoful.com. The E-magazine has notched up an 800+ subscriber base within 8 months. This encouraging response has further fuelled my passion to learning more about words and to make it an enriching and a lifelong experience.
I cannot think of a better university than yours to pursue my learning. A doctorate under the revered lexicographer Dr. Symonds will help unveil the mysteries about word formation, which in turn would help me make the English language simple and approachable to the common man. Furthermore, it will equip me with insights into the language, and test the theories that I have studied and a few of my own.
