Topic : Prepositions
Etymology : pre (before)+posit (place) + ionA preposition is a word which is placed before a noun.In reality it is a word which helps us relate two nouns. This relationship between two nouns gives us the classification of prepositions.
Depending on the relationship they establish they can be classified as follows:
- prepositions indicating time
- prepositions indicating position
- prepositions indicating reason
- prepositions indicating manner
- prepositions indicating movement
- prepositions indicating possession
Here are a few pointers to use prepositions indicating time:
- at is used to indicate specific time [eg at 2pm/at 6 in the evening]
- on is used to indicate day and date [Meet me on Monday/My birthday is on 23rd]
- by and around are used to indicate an approximate time [by means before the mentioned time : by 2pm and around means 15 mins after or before the mentioned time]
- in is used to indicate a week or month or year [in the first week of Feb,in the year 1980,in January]
- to indicate a range we use from-to [from January to March]
- for refers to the entire period named
- during refers to a small set of times within a larger period
- since is used to indicate a specific point of time in the past and hence the verb always takes a present perfect tense [ since the begining of the 1st century...]
- She wants to go to her native place because she has not seen her parents for five years.
- I went to the bathroom four times during the first act.
- The thief was sent to prison for twenty five years.
- I have known her since we were at school.
- Please meet me at/around/by 2pm. [in each case the meaning conveyed would be different]

ReplyDeletemaam...why cant we use since in the first question????
ReplyDeletesince is used where exact time is known e.g. since 2009,since 10 p.m etc.but in the 1st sentence it is five years.hence not indicating exact time,in such case for is used.
ReplyDeletema'am, how is the usage of "since" correct in the 4th qtn? Isn't the usage of "since" more specific eg: I have been living in Mumbai since 1987 or I have known him since 2005...etc.,
